I’m Makena Buchanan (the Ken in KEN.CPA), I’m licensed in California and Texas. I've prepared tax returns for Fortune 50 technology, media, and telecom companies, as well as individual and business returns for Emmy award winning actors, writers, directors, touring musicians, entertainment executives, and online content creators.
Previously – for over a decade – I worked as an independent producer of docs, scripted features, online content, and low budget horror films. I was a Sundance Institute Creative Producing Fellow and Southern Producers Lab Fellow. In addition to raising financing and driving projects, I’ve worked below-the-line as a non-union Assistant Director, gaffer, coordinator, and all up and down web content and independent film sets in Los Angeles, Austin, and Houston. I’ve also had side-hustles for as long as I can remember: photography, design, freelance videography – more recently – independent publishing, and slow fashion.
My entire career was built on experience as diverse as my interests. I love solving problems with my collaborators and clients. If you are self-employed, have a side hustle, or own a creative business, I’d love to help you out with your boring stuff.

Small business owners, artists, content creators, indie filmmakers, silver-screen, phone screens, screen printers, all are welcome. If you’re looking for annual tax preparation services for your individual and/or business tax return, reach out to me.
If you’re looking for ongoing accounting support, strategic tax planning, and collaboration, let’s chat. I’m able to provide year-round value for folks at all stages of their careers, but (as a former creative) I don’t want the cost of my services to be a drag if your business isn’t quite ready.
I want the time I save you, the headaches I prevent, and the value I bring to far outweigh what I charge. As a Collaborator, I can provide the most value to:
Folks locking in and transitioning their work from a "gig" to a sustainable business.
Professionals who recognize their time is best spent creating, not on the boring stuff.
Artists and founders navigating an increasingly chaotic financial picture.
Creative businesses generating annual revenue that makes strategic planning a necessity (typically $100k+).
Side-hustlers and owners who have an established S-Corp/LLC or are asking: "Is it time to form one?"
